Value of API crush test for ceramic proppant evaluation and field studies on productivity in unconventional reservoirs

Purpose of the presentation is to discuss the meaningfulness of the API crush test to evaluate proppant quality and, ultimately, to qualify or disqualify a proppant. We will ask if the API crush test can be used as a tool to forecast production rates or if there is a correlation between conductivity and API crush test results.

We explore the 10 myth of API crush test and show real-life data that may or may not go in line with the results.

We will focus to reconsider the question that the API crush test is meant to answer and show methods that are better suited to evaluate proppant performance at down hole reality. We than shift to the importance of ceramic proppant quality and show case studies. We will have examples of field developments where different types of proppants were used and will further look at fields where different qualities of ceramic proppant were used. We will close the presentation with discussing on what parameters to look at and open the discussion.

Most of work life Bernard spent in businesses related to upstream activities in the Oil and Gas business. He had the privilege to work on drilling rigs onshore as well as off-shore platforms and enjoyed years of practical field work and many years of business development. Bernard visited and worked in many countries, such as Germany, Russia, Kazakhstan, USA, Egypt, Austria, Turkmensitan, Uzbekistan Ukraine, Norway and Denmark. All the people and cultures he met had their contribution to his development. In his 20 years of experience Bernard saw how a tremendous change in technology, that, in its essence, transformed a traditionally conservative industry. The ever increasing challenges of exploring and producing reservoirs dictate development of technologies that 20 years ago were unheard of. Naturally these technologies open windows to a new level of condensate production, reserves that were previously classified as unrecoverable have become valuable assets. Horizontal drilling, multistage fracturing, deployment of ceramic proppant and high-tech completions have emerged just a few years ago and are turning our industry –once more-around. The magnitude of this development is, in his view, is not yet fully understood. We will see geopolitical power shifts as a result of these technological developments.
