As many of you know the SPE Board approved a new Regional scholarship program during the September Board meeting.  Information regarding these scholarships is available on the SPE website at: http://www.spe.org/spe-app/jsp/siteFunctionality/scholarships.jsp

With Russia and Caspian now as a separate SPE Region, we can take full advantage of these scholarships.  The scholarships (undergraduate) are valued at a maximum of $5,000 USD/year, renewable annually, for up to four years and a fellowship (graduate) $10,000 USD/year, renewable annually, for up to four years.  Therefore, as we fill all of these scholarships and fellowships over the next four years we will be giving $60,000 USD per year to students within this Region.

To effectively administer this program we have set up a Regional Scholarship Committee with representatives from Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.  As this is a Regional program, we have the option to modify it to best fit our Region.  Therefore, the committee made the decision to provide two new $2,500 scholarships each year for undergraduate and two new $5,000 fellowships for graduate students. While these scholarships are renewable annually for up to four years, the recipients will be reviewed each year to ensure they continue to meet all of the requirements of the scholarship.

Attached are our Regional Application forms. While we have provided the application forms in English and Russian the applications must be completed in English.  You will also need to translate any letters of recommendations into English.

Recipients will be selected by the Regional Scholarship Committee by 28 February 2009.   SPE will notify the recipients by 15 March 2009.

This program is an excellent opportunity for SPE to provide assistance to a few of the many talented students across this Region.

Best regards,
Rick Tompkins
