More details about the topic

Study of the vicinity of borehole at distances of tens and hundreds of meters from the borehole axis by any means, including electromagnetic methods, is an urgent task.

Evolution of electromagnetic and seismic-acoustic methods of material media sensing is briefly discussed in relation to technological developments in related areas: power and intelligent electronics, physics of the interaction of electromagnetic waves and conducting media.

Among the modern methods of electromagnetic sounding from the earth's surface the most promising on the criterion of depth/resolution/cost per bit of information/ease of use is a method of ultra wideband monopulse ground-penetrating radar.

Experimental works of sensing the natural and man-made environments at the depths of tens and hundreds of meters made in different hydrogeological and temperature conditions from land and water surfaces in different continents and in mines open good prospects for the creation of a logging georadar.

The device with low power consumption and weight and dimensions can be placed in a radio transparent casing with an inner diameter of 60 mm with a length determined by the size of the emitting and receiving antennas. The probe pulses with a steep leading front of the order of 10-9 seconds and a peak pulse power of over 1 MW, produce reflections from inhomogeneities of the dielectric constant in media with both high and low resistivity. The technological problems associated with adapting ground sensing equipment to logging option are briefly discussed. The experimental results greatly facilitated by the fact that radargrams and seismograms are visually similar and present the same geological features of the medium.

The solution of the direct and inverse problems of electromagnetic wave propagation in media with complex mechanisms of formation of the dielectric constant is discussed.

Besides the great penetration depth, the benefits of the advanced technology are:

1) high contrast boundaries for water-oil and borehole water-ground water contacts;

2) high accuracy, in comparison with other electromagnetic methods, in experimental determination of the distances to such boundaries, and the expected improvement of geo-steering when covering complex reservoirs;

3) good prospects for cross-well radiotomography at the spacing of the transmitter and the receiver in the boreholes for more than 500 meters.
