However, a reasonable choice of correct methods and a thorough analysis of the results are often neglected. In addition, methods for studying the carbonate (oil wet, fractured core) should differ from ones used for a classical sandstone core. In this paper, approaches and results of carbonate core research by various scientific schools are considered, the experience of carbonate core research conducted within the framework of standard works and special research works is generalized. Extraction procedures, core aging, selection of representative samples, routine and special studies were considered. Key aspects and features of work with carbonate core at all stages are highlighted: selection, transportation, preparation, sampling, research, storage. Typical errors (and their consequences) are considered and recommendations are given. Particular attention is paid to the measurements of wettability, the immobile part of hydrocarbon saturation, the nature of fracturing (in core), heterogeneity and the determination of displacement coefficients by various agents.
