Well test operations used to be the primary source of dynamic data. In recent years they have been complemented, sometimes replaced by, a wide variety of tools which provide dynamic rate, pressure and temperature data at different volume and time scales. A similar evolution has been observed in analysis methods, where well test interpretation has been generalized to what we will call the ‘Analysis of Dynamic Data’, which is a collection of analysis and modeling tools focused on the interpretation and forecast of these dynamic data. This includes, but is not limited to, Pressure Transient Analysis, Production Analysis, Production Logging, Formation Test Interpretation, and sometimes even History Matching.

Among these new tools, Permanent Downhole Gauges (PDG), Distributed Temperature / Pressure Surveys (DTS / DPS), and various multiphase surface or downhole flowmeters provide masses of additional data that are the backbone of what we will call ‘intelligent’ fields. International and major National Oil Companies have different names for these high profile projects (E-Field, I-Field, Field of the Future, Real Time Field, etc), which share the idea of saving engineers’ time and minimizing the time lag and the manual process between the acquisition of the data and post-analysis decisions.

For some measurements, such as temperature data, this is research work in progress. For permanent gauges the processing and analysis tools are ready, and the workflow is just awaiting deployment. We will present the technologies developed in the last ten years and a typical workflow covering the whole process of PDG data. We will also present the work in progress in the other areas.

Olivier Houze holds an Engineer degree from Ecole Polytechnique (1982) and a MSc in Petroleum Engineering from Stanford University (1983).

In 1983 he joined Flopetrol-Johnston (Schlumberger) as a well test field engineer in the Middle East. He was later assigned to the interpretation research group in Melun, France.

In 1987 he co-founded KAPPA with Dominique Bourdet and wrote the first versions of Saphir, a Pressure Transient Analysis program. Olivier Houze has served as KAPPA Managing Director since 1991.

Olivier Houze was involved in numerous SPE forums and workshops on well test interpretation and related topics. He was a co-author of the last SPE Monograph on Pressure Transient Testing (2009). He is a scheduled SPE Distinguished Lecturer for the 2012-13 seasons. Olivier Houze is also on the SPE Board of Directors, as the Technical Director in charge of Reservoir Description and Dynamics for 2012-2015.
